Namely, these are all games that were played on hardware that was light-years behind the current software and it seems somehow illogical that these games are running slow on today’s computers. However, there is much more to the emulating process than just giving you the game itself.

Namely, the MAME project is primarily a project that is supposed to show anyone who is interested how the programming was done and how these machines did their job. Therefore, the emulating that is done by MAME is as true to the real processes done by the machines in the old days. What this means is that no new developments are used and that everything is done by pure computation by your processor. For instance, the sound, the video and everything else that goes into a game has to be processed by the processor and no shortcuts are allowed which would enable these games to run much faster. It is a side effect of project MAME being as successful and as precise as possible.

The best way to overcome the issues with performance is to have a faster CPU. This is the simplest it gets. The faster the CPU, the better the times will be and the games will run much smoother. Also, you might want to improve your graphic card by either getting a better one or by updating your drivers. This can be of great help if you wish to improve the performance. In addition to this, the MAME also allows you certain things that can e done in order to improve the performance.

For instance, you should lower the quality of the sound. This is particularly important if the game is using analogue audio which involves such complex emulating that it can really slow down the performance. You can also use frameskip to skip some of the frames in the animation which is in most cases intelligible for the naked eye. If you overdo it, though, you might end up with choppy performance, so you need to be careful.

Of course, there are some games that will not work at all and these are mainly works in progress. However, there have been some games that cannot be emulated in a way that they will work and that’s that.

It is dedicated to “old” guys and girls like myself who have spent hours and days in their local arcade, playing the most addictive video games ever made. Sure, I may not be the most suitable to talk to you about the very beginnings back in the late 70s and early 80s as I am too young for this, but I can definitely tell you what it felt like in the late 80s and 90s when arcades were the place where young people (honestly, mostly boys) met and spent their lives. I think this is a trip down the memory lane that everyone who has ever spent a second in arcades will know how to appreciate.

It all began the very moment your school day was over. Hundred meter records were broken during those runs from the school to the arcades. Kids from all walks of life, poor, rich, dumb, smart, good, bad, they all rushed straight to arcades where they could once again feel those run-down and often cigarette-burned buttons under their fingertips and where they could once more tug and pull at the joystick, trying to beat the game and become just a tad more respected among their friends.

Arcades were also the places where you had to employ all your social skills in order to navigate them without getting beat up. Somehow, the arcades always attracted the worst from the local adolescent society. There were all kinds of kids there (or at least at mine), from the glue-sniffers to pot heads, from local thugs to the squeakiest kids from huge houses. It was the place where you had to know whom to stand up to and whom to let take your coins. It was just such a place and no one minded it.

It was also the place where you could become someone else for at least half an hour or so, playing your favorite game. You could fly a plane and shoot down aliens, or you could fight your way through exotic locations populated by things that want to kill you. It was place where you could play basketball without having to press against someone’s sweaty back on the court. It was everything you wanted it to be.

And these days, you can recreate the best part of it all, the games, thanks to MAME ROMs which will enable you to play all your favorite games for free. You can once again relive those memories and have as much fun as you did back when you were a kid. There aren’t many things that can do this and that is why MAME ROMs are such a beautiful thing. They truly turn back the clock and make you forget about the worries of the real world. With no strings attached.

Downloading MAME and then ROMs on your PC or whatever is alright if you simply want to play the games once more. However, for the real experience, nothing can compare with having a real arcade game cabinet, the whole thing that is going to take up some room, that is true, but that is also going to make the experience a whole one. Nothing can truly replace standing (or sitting) at the cabinet and playing the game, not even when you get the proper joystick and glue it to the desk. It is not really that and you know it.

The good news is that you can get old cabinets, the whole things for not that much money, especially if you can find someone who doesn’t know that it is of any value. Many people have them in their garages not even thinking about them. When you get them, you can either try and find original cartridges for the games or have different options for playing ROMs installed. However, this will require having someone who knows what they are doing participating in all this. Also, some people frown upon the idea of busting up an original arcade machine that could be made to work with minimal investments.

Luckily, there is an alternative which will be both much less costly and much more practical. Namely, you can easily find the measurements for the cabinets and then have them custom built by carpenters. This should not set you back too much money, especially if you have a buddy or two that would like to help you do this on your own. It is really not that difficult. The next thing that you are going to need is a computer. Most MAME ROMs can be played on average computers by today’s standards, of course if you do not plan on playing newer arcade games from the 21st century where NASA computers wouldn’t be of much help.

Next thing that you will need is a monitor and this is what might set you back the most. Namely, you are going to need a relatively large monitor, at least 27 inches in diagonal. You can save by getting a used one or getting one of the less expensive brands. It doesn’t really matter since these games are not supposed to be viewed on the most crystal clear monitors with the optimal characteristics. You will also need a pair of joysticks that are not expensive and that you can find online for not too much money. After you have hooked it all up, you only need download MAME and some ROMs and you are on your way.

You will then have your own arcade machine in your home, being able to play thousands of games and not having to worry about coins. It is truly a win-win situation that can provide both you and your friends with tons of fun.

There are many people who will argue that the golden age of arcades was back in the 80s or even 70s when there were real classics around such as Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Pac Man and similar titles. However, one has to acknowledge that with years came progress and that newer games definitely had more to offer to the average user who wanted something more awe-inspiring. In the late 80s and the early 90s the world saw a great rise in popularity of fighting games in which you would fight one-on-one either against the machine itself or against another player.

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat franchises are definitely two of the most well-known among numerous similar franchises and while some people may argue that there are better games than these two, the SF and the MK series provided millions of kids and adults alike with hours of good old-fashioned ass-kicking fun. In this article we are going to compare two of the arguably best installments in these two franchises, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat 3. While most people will agree that SFII is without a doubt the best installment in the SF franchise, some might argue about MK3 being the one from the MK franchise. However, we believe that these two are the best representatives of what these two great series of fighting video games are. And they are still among the most popular MAME ROMs being played.

SF II is a huge improvement over the first installment in which you could only play as Ryu. He makes a comeback in the second game, but you can now choose between seven more characters, all with very different styles of fighting and exciting new moves that made each fight a unique experience. Among the favorites are definitely Guile, an American marine, Chun-Li, a Chinese fighter who to this day remains one of the most beloved video games characters of all times, as well as Zangief and Dhalsim, with very unique fighting styles.

SF II has a truly one-of-a-kind feel to it, as all the punches and kicks feel really “meaty”. You can almost feel the impact of each of the moves on the opposing matchup. In single player, once you have beat the remaining seven playable characters, you would encounter Four Grand Masters, Balrog, a boxer, Vega, a Spanish cage fighter, Sagat, a Muay Thai master and finally M. Bison, the main antagonist and an all-round tough guy. SF II also has a perfect balance that ensures that the fights are not too easy, but that they are also not impossible to achieve. All in all, a marvelous game.

MK 3 continued in the same vein as the previous two Mortal Kombats. It is bloody, gory, balls-out fighting game in which gallons of blood are spilled and in which the final Finishing moves made it all the more fun to beat your opponent. This was particularly great when you played against a human opponent where you would additionally humiliate them by doing one of the numerous finishing moves all characters had in their repertoire. Today, when you play MK 3 as a MAME ROM, and when you can find all the finishing moves online, some of it is lost. Before, you had to learn these moves from different sources that you could find. Still, MK 3 is definitely a game worthy of everyone’s time, both thanks to the insanely involving gameplay and also thanks to the huge choice of very different characters.

Saying which of these two fighting MAME ROM games is better is something that everyone has to do on their own as no one has the right to make that choice but you. Give them both a try and find out which of these two classics you prefer.

I do not wish to pretend that this list of Top 5 MAME ROMs is anything but a personal list of favorites, but I do believe that many of you are going to find something for their tastes in this list and something that will either remind you of the old days or show you how fun arcades were once.

1. Final Fight

Final Fight is my favorite video game of all times, including PC titles, PS titles and every other video game that you can think of. It is the purest and the simplest representative of the scrolling beat ‘em up games that were available on arcade machines. It puts you in the shoes of one of three fighters on a vigilante mission of saving Jessica, daughter of Hagar, girlfriend of Cody and a good friend of Guy, which are the three playable characters. The game leads you through the Metro City as you fight the Mad Gear gang and save Jessica. Pure ass-kicking fun.

2. Street Fighter II

For me, Street Fighter II has everything a fighting MAME ROM game should have. Once again. I was looking for purity of fighting games and it is best represented in SF II. There are no monsters (Blanka arguably) and there are not too many moves that make it all seem like something unreal. Mostly, it is about guys (and a girl) handing out and taking punches. It is about fighting for the different reasons and about being the last one standing up. It has superb gameplay with subtle nuances which make every fight a unique one, especially when played against another person.

3. Metal Slug

I am talking about the original Metal Slug, not the many alien, monkey alien and whatnot sequels. The first Metal Slug might just be the most interesting game ever made with such an action feeling to it that it is more exciting than anything that has ever come out in the following decades on any platform. You are an Allied soldier fighting through battalions of Germans in order to get to the final boss. It has seen too many sequels which are quite similar in gameplay, but which introduce all kinds of different, silly characters, enemies and plots that it loses its main appeal.

4. Zed Blade

Zed Blade is a shoot em up game. In it, you are a pilot of a “space” fighter and you need to fight your way through myriad other spacecrafts, bosses and other kinds of different enemies in order to save the world, basically. You may not think of it as anything special, but believe me when I tell you that Zed Blade returns everything you give to it with interest. It is a game with a gameplay which is difficult, but not impossible and which really puts your reflexes and your brain to a test.

5. Pac-Man

Well, it’s simply Pac-Man.
